Ranking Tournaments
Ranking tournaments play a crucial role in the NZIEF competition structure, allowing players to earn ranking points based on their performance. These points contribute towards Island and National rankings and help determine selection for New Zealand representative teams.
The tournaments provide players with opportunities to test their skills, gain experience and progress towards higher-level competition. They are open to players of all skill levels and provide a structured pathway towards national and international representation.
Each year, NZIEF holds three major ranking tournaments:
- North Island Championships
- South Island Championships
- National Championships
NZIEF also sanctions Regional Ranking Events throughout the country, giving members further opportunities to compete and earn ranking points.
Ranking events include categories for Men, Ladies and Juniors (U18).
Eligibility
- Ranking tournaments are open only to current financial members of NZIEF. Learn more here.
- Players must reside in the appropriate island to enter the North or South Island Championships. Stewart Island residents may enter the South Island Championships, while Chatham Islands residents may enter the North Island Championships.
- Players may enter only one Island Championship each year.
- Regional Ranking Events are open to all NZIEF members, regardless of where in New Zealand they live.
- Players may enter a Regional Ranking Event on either island. Any points earned will still contribute towards the player’s appropriate Island and National rankings.
Tournament Formats
The North Island, South Island and National Championships generally consist of section play followed by double elimination, with knockout rounds determining the final placings.
Regional event hosts may select from NZIEF-approved formats. The format, entry fee, venue and other event details will be confirmed when each tournament is announced.
Regional Ranking Events
Regional Ranking Events provide additional competitive opportunities for NZIEF members around the country.
Regional events:
- Must be open to all NZIEF members, including Men, Ladies and Juniors.
- Must not clash with other NZIEF ranking tournaments or periods when NZIEF members are representing New Zealand overseas.
- May have entry fees, formats and prize pools determined by the host, subject to NZIEF requirements.
- May be entered by members from either island.

Ranking Points
Ranking points can be earned through sanctioned National, Island and Regional Ranking Events. The number of points awarded depends on the player’s finishing position and the type of event.

Points awarded at Regional Ranking Events are scaled according to the number of entries:
- 64 or more players: 100% of the regional points allocation
- 48–63 players: 75% of the regional points allocation
- 47 or fewer players: 50% of the regional points allocation
Points earned by Ladies and Juniors at Regional Ranking Events contribute towards their respective Island and National category rankings.
